Such a beautiful song. Traditional Scottish. There are many versions, some not so kind regarding Barbara Allen, but I like the concept of this version. Sometimes we cannot find a clear path to those we love, for many reason. Sometimes it’s us getting in the way, sometimes it’s beyond our control. These two lovers could not find their way, but in death they did, they found each other and would never be separated again. They became flowers and grew together for all time.
lyrics
T'was in the merry month of May, when all the green buds were swelling
A young man on his deathbed lay, for the love of Barbara Allen
He sent his servant to the town, to where she was dwelling
”My Master’s sick and he calls for you
If your name is Barbara Allen"
Then slowly, slowly she got up, and slowly she went to him
And all she said when she got there
"Young man, I think you're dying"
He turned his face unto the wall, for death was surely in him
oh fare thee well to my sweet friends all
and farewell to you Barbara Allen"
as she walked on the road to home She saw his hearse a-comin'
"Oh lay him down on the cold cold ground That I may gaze upon him"
oh mother mother make my bed, Make it soft and narrow
For My true love has died today, I’ll die for him tomorrow
They buried her in the old churchyard
and him they laid beside her
From her grave there grew a red red rose
From his grew a green briar
They grew up high on the old church tower,
till they could grow no higher
And there they twined in a true love’s knot
and The rose ran round the briar
Some people say that her heart was cold
Or say that he did slight her
But through the flowers the truth is told
In the red red rose and the briar
