A sad and incredibly beautiful lament for a love gone astray, written for one of Janette’s closest friends. This song draws on Celtic traditions and features lovely acoustic guitar, harp and haunting clarinet.
I have based this song on a traditional from. I gratefully acknowledge the Celtic tradition and the People who have taught me so much. This song is dedicated to Kate and Josiah, and to the courage of women who continue to love and to laugh in spite of cruelty.
lyrics
Oh the day is nearly done
Fine flowers in the valley, oh
Soon the winter wind
Shall weep and moan
Over the greenwood side, oh
There's a child to be born in June
Fine flowers in the valley, oh
Bonny baby what shall we do?
Down by the greenwood side, oh
Bonny child's 'twas a year and a day
Fine flowers in the valley. oh
Oh she's loved a man who did her betray
Down by the greenwood side, oh
She leaned her back against a tree
Fine flowers in the valley, oh
Under the green leaves, her tears fell free
All over the greenwood side, oh
Now he's gone and taken your heart away
Now it's all wrong and all gone astray
All in the name of love
Oh like a summer's day
And it fades so fast away
All the pretty flowers hide some thorn
Fine flowers in the valley, oh
The hand that shall ne'er be pricked
Has never been born
Not all in the greenwood side, oh
Now it's done and too late to turn away
Now it's begun; never be the same
Caught in the lover's game
You're playing it hard
But it fades so fast
Now it's all gone and it's taken
Your breath away
It's all wrong but it's too late
All in the name of love
All for a summer's day
And it faces so fast away...
