I’ve called this song this name for fun, mostly because the chorus is thus. Seemed sensible. The song is one of two songs with the same name. Very confusing. It’s the story of a bloke who seduces a willing if naïve young woman, and when she takes him to task on his promise, he slights her and flees. In truth he made no promise, but perhaps she wanted to hear one so badly that so she made one up in her own mind. Another common practise. I don’t blame the young man, and the woman seemed to enjoy herself. It’s a lovely song, a wise song, a cautionary tale.
lyrics
Well who are you my pretty fair maid, who are you me honey?
Well who are you my pretty fair maid, who are you me honey?
She answered me right courtesy, “ I am me mammy’s darling”
With me Too Ry Ah, faddle diddle dah
Deary faddle diddle dar-i-oh
Will you come to me mammy’s house when th moon is shinning clearly ?
Will you come to me mammy’s house when th moon is shinning clearly ?
I’ll open the door and ill let you in, the devil o’ one will hear us
With me Too Ry Ah, faddle diddle dah
Deary faddle diddle dar-i-oh
Well she led my horse and she took my hand and she led me to the stables
Well she led my horse and she held my hand and she led me to the stables
There’s food for your horse and there’s wine for you so drink if you are able
With me Too Ry Ah, faddle diddle dah
Deary faddle diddle dar-i-oh
Well there we lay the whole of the night and the moon was shinning clearly
Well there we played and sported the night
And the moon was shinning clearly
And then I rose and I found me clothes, and said farewell my dearie
With me Too Ry Ah, faddle diddle dah
Deary faddle diddle dar-i-oh
Well she took my arm and she said to me “when will you be returning?
When you come back will you marry me, when will you be returning?”
When broken shells make Christmas bells…
A lesson to be learning
With me Too Ry Ah, faddle diddle dah
Deary faddle diddle dar-i-oh
